Hanging Gardens: How to Make Them Correctly.

Already over 2600 years ago, ancient Babylon became famous for its "Hanging Gardens", which were considered works of great ingenuity and counted among the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Today, making a roof garden is certainly easier. It will give us the opportunity to give free rein to our creativity and at the same time embellish part of your home with plants of various kinds by cultivating aromatic plants, evergreens, shrubs, small trees, lawn or whatever you prefer on your balcony or terrace simple enough.

To achieve it optimally, however, you need to follow simple rules. Here they are enclosed in 4 processing stages:

Phase 1 - FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Before proceeding with the construction of your roof garden, ask a technician, surveyor or engineer, to evaluate the feasibility of the thing, and to carry out the necessary waterproofing works on the floor.

It is also important to check in advance with a technician the loads that the floor can withstand, avoiding overloading it with excessive weights, and considering that 1 kg of wet soil doubles its normal weight.

Phase 2 - DRAINAGE SYSTEM

The next step is the construction of a drainage system by creating a crawl space, very important in order to avoid stagnation of water which would damage the plants and, over time, there would be a risk of infiltration into the attic. Until a few years ago, gravel and pebbles or expanded clay were used. But these materials had limitations. Above all, the former, in addition to considerably weighing down the attic, became clogged over time, thus preventing the correct drainage of the water. Today, however, thanks to new technologies it is possible to create an effective drainage system in a simple and fast way.

Modules made of recycled plastic can be usedWAYS.

Modì is an effective tool that allows us to improve environmental well-being in our cities as:

  • It brings climate benefits
  • It favors a useful contribution to water regulation as it accumulates, retains and returns water to the environment in a reduced percentage
  • It reduces the noise pollution coming from the outside

With Modì modules, maintenance costs are considerably reduced as the entire roof is protected from direct sunlight, bad weather and temperature changes caused by seasonal changes, thus increasing the lifespan of the roof itself and constituting a exceptional thermal protection.

They are also very easy to install.

After installing the Modì, a layer ofvolcanic lapilliwhich will close all the hollows of the Modì forming a solid layer that will support the ground that will subsequently be added.

This lapillus layer will then be covered withTNT (Non-woven Fabric)insulator that will protect the draining holes from clogging of the soil and any roots.

Phase 3 - IRRIGATION SYSTEM

After the drainage plant it will be necessary to make a good oneirrigation system. It is advisable to create an automated system so that management is entrusted to aprogrammer that manages irrigation independently; among other things, the latest generation programmers are equipped with a Wi-Fi connection for remote control of the system.Prato ErbosoShopin addition to providing consultancy and design, it is a distributor of the best brands and products for irrigation.

Phase 4 - TERRICCIO ADDITION

The last phase before planting is the contribution of the land.

For the cultivation of hanging gardens, there are special technical soils with a low weight, rich in organic and mineral substances and with a great water storage capacity.

Depending on the thickness of the soil layer, the type of crop to be planted can be decided:

  • for thicknesses up to 10 cm, perennial herbaceous plants, bulbs and aromatic herbs will be chosen;
  • for thicknesses up to 15 cm, lawns will do well;
  • for thicknesses up to 30 cm, shrubs and small trees can also be planted;
  • for thicknesses up to 40-60 cm, even plants up to 10 meters high can be planted.

It is advisable to mix absorbent polymers with the soil which will allow a further and significant saving of water by reducing irrigation times and interventions.

For the lawn you can choose betweensowing and the lawn ready.

Finally, below is an insight into how to make a good plant for hanging gardens.
